Types of Canadian passports

Passport Canada issues over 3 million travel documents annually, 98% of which are regular passports. There are six types of passports issued to Canadian citizens and two types of travel documents that are issued only to refugees and stateless persons living in Canada.

TIPS TO HELP REDUCE YOUR WAIT TIME
AT THE PASSPORT OFFICE

In an effort to reduce line-ups and wait times in passport offices, the Passport Office of Canada has issued important tips to make the application process a less time-consuming experience for passport applicants, especially during the peak season, which starts generally in November and ends in July.

Application forms for Canadian Passports are available at any Passport Office and Canada Post outlets across the country.

Applicants who do not require their passports on an urgent basis, i.e. who do not plan or need to travel in the next 8 week-period, should:
Mail-in or courier their application form and related documentation to:

The Passport Office

Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade

Ottawa, ON

K1A 0G3

The Passport Office will send their requested travel document within 20 working days upon receipt of the application. Take advantage of passport services available at Canada Post outlets. These outlets act as receiving agents for the Passport Office; employees have been trained to do a review for completeness of the applications and supporting documents. Applications are forwarded to the Passport Office within 48 hours. The Passport Office will deliver the requested travel document to the applicant within 15 working days upon receipt of the application package. There is a nominal fee for this service, which covers Canada Post costs.

  1. Ensure the application form is filled out properly and all the required documentation is enclosed. Any missing or incomplete information will create delays in the application process. It is also important to ensure a guarantor signs the application form.
  2. Applicants have to provide an original document proving their Canadian citizenship by submitting either a citizenship certificate or a birth certificate. Applicants who were born in Ontario and must apply for an original birth certificate must allow five months for regular service and 12 days for urgent service with proof of travel.
  3. Submit 2 passport photographs and ensure the guarantor signs one of them.
